Lake Willoughby is located in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom near the town of Westmore.
Lake Willoughby is a "glacial lake" and is over 300ft deep making it the deepest in
the state, and very much resembles a Norwegian fjord. The lake is over 1600 acres
and is a favorite fishing spot with lots of yellow perch, lake trout, brown trout,
rainbow trout and landlocked salmon. The lake is bordered by Mt. Pisgha on the east
and Mt. Hor on the west. The hiking trail up Mt Pisgah offers breathtaking views of
the lake. The trails are accessible from both the North and South sides of Pisgah.
Lake Willoughby has wonderful beaches at both the North and South ends with easily accessible
swimming areas on both beaches. One of the South end locations has a clothing optional swimming
area. There is a State of Vermont Fish and Game boat launch in Westmore where people can launch their
motorized water craft. Kayaks and Canoes are also seen in large numbers.
During the winter months, Lake Willoughby becomes an ice fishing hotspot. The lake is dotted
with ice shantys and people ice fishing in the open.
Scuba divers also routinely use the lake for training and recreational diving.
Lake Willoughby is in the middle of
Willoughby State Forest.
